Anyone got any tips for working with pastels? I've never really used colour in my art but I bought a set of pastel pencils today and fancy having a try at something, probably Rukia-based but perhaps Ichigo-Vizard. |

First off, make sure the paper you use is thick enough to withstand the pressure. Despite your best efforts, you will end up pressing down on the paper. Everyone does. Watercolour paper might be too much, but something like sugar paper should be fine. If you use normal sheet A4, be careful or rippage WILL occur. Don't mix your pastels in the box. Sounds logical but you'd be surprised about how hard it is to remove dark red from a yellow if you accidentally get them muddled up... obviously, careful handling is a given as they can crack easily. Before using for the first time on a drawing, experiment. If you're using square ones, put it flat onto the paper and smear away to see the textures you're going to get with the paper you use. Put it on its end, and see what you get. Try different pressures. Try scribbling, and finer detail. Pastels are an extremely flexible tool to use. If you've got ones that are watercolour-based or similar, get a damp paintbrush and wipe around an area of colour to make it look more solid. If not, then simply use a piece of cloth, tissue or even your finger. The dust is remarkably spreadable. Try a dark block of colour, then using lighter shades on top. Then try a darker colour and using lighter ones on top. The key thing with all the above is just to play around and have fun, and see what you can and can't do before you go and wreck something you spent an hour inking. My recommendation: use darker base colours and then highlight. Also hit up Google or Deviantart for some basic tutorials to get you going. Tutorials plus your imagination are always a good thing. So long as you can apply your imagination to the technique, you're on to a winner. Or if all else fails, find a dodgy way of downloading Photoshop and scan your images in, and colour them in there. Hell, works for me. |

(゚Д゚) Holy crap! That's insane! The detail is excellent! Though it's not an original piece. This is none-the-less incredible. absolutely no critiques, you managed to capture the look almost perfectly. |

Was doing some pen-sketching last night. I am so bad at original compositions that it's just not funny, but I try now and then and this kinda stuff is the result. I blame my dad for not being able to come up with original things, as he always taught me to straight-copy. Bit of a pain... if I ever have kids I'm making them improvise big time ![]() Takahashi Chihiro ![]() Takahashi reading ![]() Takahashi grinding herbs

More pen sketching...![]() This time practise for a pic of Yamamoto, Kyoraku and Ukitake in battle stance. Each has their shikai activated. Might also throw in their direct subordinates if there's room. |

My first attempt at using photoshop. This is the free version of the "photoshop lightroom" ~ I have no idea if this is as good as the photoshop MoD etc use. Anyway, here's my attempt at modifying a picture (limited to shade changes and softening in places, as I don't really understand how it all works yet).![]() From L to: L!

Nice job. Don't be afraid to experiment; so long as you have the original image - or a back-up in case you accidentally save over it - then just get creative. Can you use layers in this program of yours? |
